A Henophone

An intelligent farmer living in Des Moines County, has invented a henophone, modeled on the principle of a telephone, by which  one reliable old hen, occupying a central office in the hennery, sits on all the nests about the establishments, leaving other owls free to lay eggs, scratch, and cackle.  As fast as a new nest contains the full compliment of eggs, it is connected to the central office by a copper wire, and the business is settled.  The only trouble about the machine is that it sits so hard it hatches out the porcelain nest eggs along with the others, so that one chick in every nest is born with glass eyes, and and the farmer has to buy and train a dog to lead it around.  This makes it expensive. - Burlington Hawkeye.
