Here's another image fortunate enough to be identified and dated. This CDV (carte-de-visite) has a tax stamp on the back dated May 3, 1865 with the name John Snodgrass. John's banjo shows a very early effort at elaborating on the design of the peghead. This design is common on later instruments, but this may be the earliest known image of such a piece.
