The Banjo

Home  Back to Material Culture

The banjo has been the subject of much ridicule and also much praise.  It is not known when the first banjo came to Kentucky, but slaves would certainly have brought the knowledge of the instrument to the Commonwealth by late 18th century.  The banjo's influence on American culture and music is far reaching.  From its west African roots, to the modern stage, the banjo has helped shape who we are.
