This image shows the intersection of Main and Limestone in downtown Lexington about 1860. The bell tower in the background is the old Main Street Christian Church, site of the Campbell-Rice debate over which Henry Clay presided in 1843. In the center is the Phoenix Hotel, which today is the site of Phoenix Park and the Lexington Public Library. To the right is Elrod's Photographic Gallery. Evidently, this image was taken by one of Elrod's rivals as the sign for his gallery has been defaced; it can be seen at the top of the building.
